In this post, we listed all PhD, Postdoctoral, and Researcher Vacancies available at the University of Hamburg in Germany as well as the deadlines. Our experts will regularly update this list with any available opportunities. Therefore, please highlight this post, because maybe next time you will find your matched academic position.

Research Associate for the Project “Cluster of Excellence ‚CUI: Advanced Imaging of Matter‘- Imaging at extreme intensities using XFEL” § 28 Subsection 3 HmbHG

Salary level: EGR. 13 TV-L

Start date: as soon as possible, fixed for a period of two years (This is a fixed-term contract in accordance with Section 2 of the academic fixed-term labor contract act [Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz, WissZeitVG]).

Application deadline: 20.01.2023

Scope of work: full-time position suitable for part-time

Responsibilities:

Duties include academic services in the project named above. Research associates may also pursue independent research and further academic qualifications.

Specific Duties:

X-ray Free Electron Lasers (XFEL) provide orders of magnitude increase in pulse frequency compared to other sources and have the potential to realize the goal of single-molecule diffractive imaging. Atomic-resolution diffraction from single macromolecules ideally requires pulse fluences above 1014photons/um2, which is about two orders of magnitude higher than available in current experiments. We are developing multilayer Laue lenses, which can be used to focus X-rays down to few nanometers. Combined with XFELs this opens up opportunities for 3D imaging at the nanometer scale and studying materials under extreme temperatures and pressures.

The specific duties are:

  • develop and apply techniques to characterize and improve X-ray lenses
  • develop new imaging methodologies using lab sources, synchrotrons and XFELs
  • investigate the effects of intense X-ray fields generated by focusing XFEL pulses onto materials
  • investigate coherent diffraction using highly convergent beams
  • prepare research proposals, perform experiments at XFEL facilities and process the data

Requirements:

A university degree in a relevant field plus doctorate.

A PhD in Physics or related field. Experience with synchrotron, XFEL or X-ray lab source. Knowledge of programming language (e.g. Python, C++) and experience in wavefront sensing x-ray microscopy or coherent diffraction is an advantage. Good written and communication skills and the ability to work in an international team with English as a working language.

Research Associate for the Project “Optimising and probing 2D superfluidity in ultracold gases” § 28 Subsection 3 HmbHG

Institution: Faculty of Mathematics, Informatics and Natural Sciences, Department of Physics, Institute of Laser Physics/ Cluster of Excellence ‘CUI: Advanced Imaging of Matter’

Salary level: EGR. 13 TV-L

Start date: as soon as possible, fixed until 31.12.2025 (This is a fixed-term contract in accordance with Section 2 of the academic fixed-term labor contract act [Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz, WissZeitVG]).

Application deadline: 10.01.2023

Scope of work: part-time

Responsibilities:

In the period until 30.06.2023, duties primarily include teaching and research. In the period 01.07.2023-31.12.2025, duties include academic services in the project named above.

Research associates may also pursue independent research and further academic qualifications.

Experimental research with ultracold atoms. Performing and analysing measurements on 2D gases. Upgrading measurement apparaturs, developing new techniques for manipulation and imaging of ultracold quantum gases. Another specific duty is teaching of three hours per week during teaching times (3 LVS) in the period until 30.06.2023.

Requirements:

A university degree in a relevant field.

Excellent knowledge of quantum physics, and preferably also experience in laboratory work with lasers and optics and electronics.
