Research area and project description:
New farming practices promoted through agro-environmental regulation to achieve  climate, water quality and biodiversity policy objectives   imply that farmers’ use of the land for production of commodities changes to more passive land use,  which involves costs, lost flexibility and uncertainty.  The low uptake of many agri-environmental programs in Denmark and other places indicates that there are barriers to this type of regulations, and that all costs and barriers are not properly understood.  We therefore assume that voluntary contractual arrangements between farmers and the authorities can be developed and used more effectively to enhance climate change mitigation and water protection objectives simultaneously. Examples are the CAP subsidy schemes, including support to farmers as part of EUs Common Agricultural Policy (CAP): Greening and eco-schemes in Pillar I, and agri-environmental schemes as part of pillar II. 

The aim of this proposed PhD study is to reveal farmers’ preferences for entering into voluntary policy programs, with varying innovative instrument designs for the achievement of climate,  water quality and biodiversity policy objectives (or other scenario targets set). This will include investigation of how removal or reductions of barriers can enhance farmers’ adoption of the voluntary contracts and schemes directed at effective implementation of climate and water quality targets, and of different policy instrument design options, such as outcome versus management based support, collective incentive mechanisms or alternative mechanisms, including trade and carbon credit schemes.  Analysis and assessments of combinations of subsidy and tax schemes is also very relevant, including taking tradeoffs and synergies between  environmental objectives into account.

The PhD study will be part of the LandCraft center at Aarhus University (Center for Landscape Research in Sustainable Agricultural Futures (land-craft.dk)), and is funded by this center. Cooperation with the other researchers in LandCraft is highly encouraged to facilitate and develop an interdisciplinary understanding of the green transition in agriculture, and how to adapt landscape management to reduce the environmental footprint of agricultural production systems,  while increasing their resilience to climate change.  LandCraft offers cooperation with leading scientists  within political science, environmental economics, interdisciplinary modelling and assessment, and natural scientists researching the processes that lead to greenhouse gas emissions and loss of nutrients to the environment.

Qualifications and specific competences:
The position requires a 2-year Master’s degree, preferably with a specialization in political science or environmental economics or related disciplines, with good results. The candidate must have strong skills in quantitative methods and advanced statistical analysis. Experience with survey design, qualitative interviewing techniques and/or discrete choice experiments would also be beneficial, but is not required. If graduation is expected in the very near future, documentation for final thesis and date of examination must be enclosed in the application. Applicants demonstrating a good understanding of integrated, problem-oriented analysis is preferred.

Research area and project description:
This is an exciting opportunity to be part of a Horizon Europe Marie Skłodowska-Curie Doctoral Network (TOAST*), consisting of 10 PhD students (3 of which will be hired by the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at AU).

With the advancement of AI, it is possible to use AI techniques to predict the next movement of human and machine in real time for a given operation, particularly in repetitive or constrained environments. Accurate motion prediction can interpolate and extrapolate human and machine motions for reducing perceived E2E latency, even reducing the demand on E2E communication resources. Motion prediction is promising to address the instability in remote haptic interactions, thereby providing graceful service degradation in critical communication conditions.

This project aims to apply Deep Learning models to accurately predict human and robot motions in real-time using time-series data, thereby enabling dynamic network service provisioning in Tactile Internet. The project will identify the interactions between the Tactile Internet service and the network to enable dynamic adaptation and reconfiguration of the E2E service provisioning. This project will analyse the effect of missing data from single or multiple modalities due to packet loss or communication outage in the performance of the predictions and propose ways to increase robustness. Model-Augmented Haptic Teleoperation, also known as Model-mediated teleoperation (MMT) is a promising approach for Tactile Internet to address both stability and transparency in teleoperation under communication latency and packet loss. The idea of MMT is that the local device uses a local model, i.e., the digital twin of the remote device, to approximate the remote environment. Instead of transmitting actual haptic feedback from the remote device to the local device, the haptic feedback can be computed based on the local model without noticeable delay. However, accurate online model parameters estimation is challenging, model mismatch can, for example, cause position tracking error, resulting in dangerous slave behaviour.

This project aims to design Edge Intelligence using transfer learning and continual learning approaches to develop a new neural network-based estimation of remote environment for MMT. The key is to design and implement new machine learning methods for achieving high performance with small training data, and to design and implement continual learning methods to improve the NNs’ performance based on newly collected experience. The outcome is expected to achieve model estimation acceleration for remote environment, and to increase model accuracy and minimize model mismatch, i.e., enhancing stability and transparency, under large latency.

Distributed edge intelligence is one of the enabling technologies for time-critical applications by allowing devices to offload computation and energy demanding operations to computing resources in the proximity. In Tactile Internet, due to the resource limitation on the robot side, it is desirable to leverage distributed edge intelligence instead of performing computation locally.

This project aims to develop a distributed edge intelligence framework for the Tactile Internet, including the development of advanced offloading methods for computation tasks (e.g., Deep Learning real-time inference, 3D reconstruction), balancing Cloud and Edge computation and edge caching. In particular, task-oriented communication, an emerging communication paradigm, will be studied and applied for designing efficient transmission strategies for task data in computation offloading. It is important to understand trade-offs of edge intelligence engine’s location in the network and the communication and computation load of tasks, under different network QoS and user QoE requirements of tactile Internet services, and then perform joint optimization of computation, communication, and haptic control.

A key sustainability target of 21st century is to evaluate and reduce the environmental impacts associated with livestock production, while addressing the increased demand for meat production (European_Commission, 2020). Consumption of pork meat is expected to increase by 40% in 2050 because the global population could reach almost 10 billion by 2050. The rapid development of pig farming has a tremendous impact on the global environment. The increased pig production may further increase its contribution to GHG emissions and it therefore cannot be neglected.

Denmark is ranked at 12th globally for pig production and the world’s largest exporter of pigs, which accounts for 35% of the world’s annual pig exporter (FAO statistics). Although the pork production is the second largest contribution to GHG emissions among livestock productions, accounting for around 10% of CH4 emissions in Denmark, the methane conversion factor of liquid slurry for swine reaches 13.92% comparing to 4.82% for cattle. It indicates that there is a large potential to reduce the methane emission from slurry pit of pig houses in order to contribute in achieving the goal of being climate neutral by 2050. Meanwhile, the agricultural sector is the main contributor of NH3 emission, which accounts for around 90% of the total NH3 emission in Denmark. Although NH3 is not considered as a GHG, it is an environmentally concerned emitted gas and the biological reaction of NH3 itself can promote the formation of secondary pollutants such as N2O, which has a large greenhouse warming potential (1 g N2O emitted equals 298 g CO2eq).

This PhD project is supported by Innovation Fund Denmark (IFD). It is well known that manure management, ventilation systems and flow patterns above the emission surfaces influence gaseous emissions significantly. The applicant is expected to investigate how to design and control the ventilation systems and manure management systems simultaneously so that the emissions of GHG and ammonia can be mitigated. Both on-site experimental tests and numerical simulations are to be conducted. The successful applicant has the opportunity to work in an interdisciplinary team where both researchers and industrial partners will participate in the activities of the project.

Novel ecosystems (NEs) have species compositions or abiotic conditions without historical precedent, e.g., intercontinental species invasions and extraordinary warming. NEs are spreading fast and expected to be globally dominant by the late 21st century. Key drivers are climate change, globalization, and extirpation of large-sized organisms, resulting in ecosystems deviating from anything seen for millions of years. The spread of NEs is likely to profoundly affect biosphere functioning but how so is poorly understood at present. To address this complex theme, ECONOVO will take an unparalleled, interdisciplinary approach, integrating Big Data and field-based ecology, satellite-based remote sensing, archaeology, paleoecology, and population genomics to bridge this crucial knowledge gap.

Job description

This postdoc project will be part of the ECONOVO research theme 1: Diversity Dynamics, focused on understanding biodiversity dynamics in novel ecosystems (NEs) past and present. This position is focused on isotopic niche dynamics of selected terrestrial megafauna during the Late Glacial and Early Holocene in Europe and/or Africa. The aim of this project will be first to collate relevant stable isotopic data from the literature and available databases, and then model megafaunal isotopic niche spaces comparatively and in relation to background environmental variables and key markers of ecosystem novelty, as inferred from published proxy records and/or models. The postdoc is expected to lead a systematic compilation of published stable isotope values for relevant terrestrial megafauna and to use existing modelling tools (e.g., rKIN, SIBER, nicheROVER) to assess dietary niche breadth and stability across time and space. Further, dietary niches should then be assessed in relation to the pace and nature of ecosystem novelty during these periods. Finally, the postdoc is expected to contribute ideas and concepts to the project and lead at least two high-quality papers in this research area. It is also expected that the postdoc contributes to the project’s public outreach and teaching, as well as collaborating with other team members, including students, sharing skills, and helping solve problems in her/his area of expertise.

Come to Aarhus University for a two-year postdoctoral position and join a dynamic group, working on global optimization of atomistic structure. Among the methods developed in the group is GOFEE that employs Bayesian statistics to identify the most promising structural candidate among a set of candidates relaxed in a surrogate energy landscape (a machine learned potential). Another method, ASLA, constructs the structural candidates based on image recognition and reinforcement learning.

Your role would be to use these methods in search for challenging nano-scale structure in materials and surface science projects and to extend the methods with new intriguing techniques. The latter could be generative adversarial networks (GAN) or other established schemes from data science, or they could be your own new ideas that are perhaps more domain specific.

Your Profile

The PhD student will carry out research within discrete mathematics, as part of a Swedish Research Council-funded project with a focus on the Traveling Salesman Problem and will be supervised by Gerold Jäger. 

The aim of the project is the development of novel algorithms for the Traveling Salesman Problem and will include both practical implementations of heuristic algorithms based on sensitivity analysis and theoretical research. 

Currently, the research group in discrete mathematics consists of 18 persons. The group is very active and has a weekly seminar, different workshops, and a frequent flow of visitors and international collaborators. We have several PhD students and postdocs. Our research covers a wide range of areas and touches upon extremal, probabilistic, algorithmic, game theoretic, computational, topological, geometric and algebraic combinatorics.

Qualifications
The doctoral student will be admitted for studies at third-cycle level in Mathematics. To fulfil the general entry requirements, the applicant must have qualifications equivalent to a completed degree at second-cycle level or completed course requirements of at least 240 ECTS credits, including at least 60 ECTS credits at second-cycle level. 

To fulfil the specific entry requirements to be admitted for studies at third-cycle level in mathematics, the applicant is required to have completed at least 60 ECTS credits within the field of mathematics, of which at least 15 ECTS credits shall have been acquired at second-cycle level. A postdoctoral position is available at the Department of Plant Physiology, Umeå Plant Science Centre: a stimulating research environment at Umeå University. Project description

The establishment of photosynthetic activity drives a cellular shift from requiring external energy sources for growth and development to becoming a supplier of energy to support growth of new developing tissues. In eukaryotic cells changes to intracellular metabolism confer widespread variations in epigenetic pattern. However, the challenge is to understand how fluctuations in metabolic state control chromatin modifications. We will address this question by investigating the dynamics of global chromatin organization in response to the establishment of photosynthesis, a process that causes major changes to the cellular metabolic activity. The postdoctoral fellow will be involved in a large project where we determine the distribution of important modifications of histone H3 and identify the proteins such as transcription factors or chromatin remodellers associated with those specific modifications. 

Qualifications

To be appointed under the postdoctoral agreement, the postdoctoral fellow is required to have completed a doctoral degree or a foreign degree deemed equivalent to a doctoral degree. This qualification requirements must be fulfilled no later than at the time of the appointment decision.

Cardiovascular disease is the most common cause of death in Sweden and worldwide today. Our research group investigates various risk factors for cardiovascular disease. By linking national registers and databases with Västerbotten’s unique population surveys, we can follow risk factor patterns within  individuals for more than half a century. We can thus study temporal relationships between different risk factors, and analyze how these affect the risk of cardiovascular disease in different phases of life. We particularly focus on the diagnosis, prognosis and treatment of high blood pressure, as well as diseases of the aorta.

The successful candidate will work within the COBRA study that aims at studying associations between aging-related brain changes in relation to cognitive aging, with focus on the dopamine system, grey and white matter, cerebrovascular function, and activation patterns, (. The COBRA study is carried out in close collaboration with colleagues at the Karolinska Institute, University of Gothenburg, and the Max Planck Institute in Berlin.

The assignment consists of:
-analyzing brain imaging data from PET and MRI that has been collected at three timepoints for the same cohort (baseline, 5-year and 10-year follow-up, where the 10-year assessment is currently ongoing)
-analyzing cognitive data (episodic memory, working memory, perceptual speed) from computerized tests; and performance change over time
– perform statistical analyzes, e.g. regression analyses, group comparisons, structural equation models, to study brain-cognition associations
